Welcome to

Welcome to the first Horizons publication of 2025 – and what a start to the year it has been! It feels like I’ve blinked, and we're suddenly at the end of March.
This swift passage of time mirrors the remarkable growth of the sustainable finance market, which has evolved from its infancy to the dynamic phase of adolescence. It’s fitting, then, that the close of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 have prompted market participants, regulators, and stakeholders to pause and reflect on how existing initiatives and frameworks can effectively support this critical stage of development. Now is the time to assess what revisions, additions, or simplifications are necessary to guide the market to maturity - ensuring it evolves into a fully-fledged, responsible adult. This includes both voluntary efforts (through market initiatives and frameworks) and mandatory actions (e.g., the EU Omnibus).
It’s essential that we all actively contribute to shaping and nurturing the future of this market, and this will remain a core focus for the LMA in 2025. Already this year, we have published updated Green, Social, and Sustainability-Linked Loan Principles (Principles), along with supporting guidance. These revisions aim to strengthen the robustness of frameworks while also highlighting how borrowers can better leverage the significant work they’ve already done to maximise the impact of sustainability-labelled instruments.
Our ongoing work on transition and gender-lens financing is progressing, and I’m optimistic that we will have something to present to the market in the next couple of months. Looking ahead, 2025 will focus on the role of pure-play companies within the labelled market and the accessibility of labelled instruments for SMEs.
We are also in the process of establishing a Middle East Sustainability sub-chapter. While we are still defining its specific mandate, the goal is to complement the work of the overarching Sustainability Committee, as well as address the unique regional challenges and opportunities in sustainability. If you're interested in learning more or getting involved, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Lastly, from an events perspective, we will be hosting dedicated sustainability events and roundtables in Nigeria, Sweden, Norway, and Finland during Q2. If you're interested in attending or participating, please let me know.
2025 promises to be an exciting and action-packed year, and I look forward to collaborating with all of you as we continue to drive the sustainable finance agenda forward.
